Ants on a Log picture recipe card for kids from Eat. Play. Love. Occupational Therapy

Lots of kids, including autistic kids and kids who are still building language, follow pictures far more easily than spoken directions. A picture stays put. Words disappear the second you say them.

This card walks your child through ants on a log one picture at a time: wash, dry, cut, spread, add the ants, eat. Set it next to the cutting board, point to the step, and wait. Fewer words gives them room to figure out what comes next.

Every step builds a skill we work on in OT: sensory exploration, two hands working together, hand strength, and the pincer grasp they will use for buttons and pencils.

Written by Lindsey Wood, MOT, OTR/L — pediatric occupational therapist and founder of Eat. Play. Love.
