Sensory-Friendly Adaptive Dance for Kids
By Lindsey Wood, MOT, OTR/L
Eat. Play. Love. Occupational Therapy is launching Move & Groove, an inclusive dance and movement program for children ages 4–8 in the San Diego area. It's led by a pediatric occupational therapist trained in the DanceAbility® Method, so every child can participate regardless of ability level.
Traditional dance classes can overwhelm children with sensory sensitivities or developmental differences — loud music, fast instruction, and performance pressure. This program prioritizes inclusivity, celebrating each child's unique movement style rather than perfection, with the emphasis on creativity, connection, and joy.
Because an OT leads the class, fun comes with functional development. Children build strength and coordination through jumping, balancing, and spinning; the structured movement and music support sensory regulation; and group activities encourage turn-taking and peer appreciation in a pressure-free, confidence-building environment.
The DanceAbility® Method is internationally recognized for bringing together people of all abilities through improvisational dance. For children, it creates a welcoming space where they feel accepted and valued rather than judged.
Move & Groove runs Thursdays, September 25–October 16, 5:00–5:30 PM at Kids & Coffee in Carlsbad, $35 per class. It welcomes children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing challenges, and motor delays — and any child who loves music and movement. Space is limited; registration is online.
